About ....

The two-year Master’s program in ASEAN Studies is developed in response to the growing global importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). As one of the most prominent regional institutions in the world, ASEAN has long been established amid the context of immense complexity and diversity in terms of political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions among member countries.

In this regard, the program offers students a comprehensive and profound understanding of such diversity in both traditional and contemporary features, along with the essential training in language skills of a chosen nation. Beyond gaining knowledge about the region through its regional institution, the interdisciplinary focus of the ASEAN Studies particularly aims at equipping necessary skills so as to apply this knowledge in a wide variety of personal experiences and professional contexts. In order to better accommodate full-time working professionals, all courses are conducted on Friday’s evening and weekend. The students will also benefit from courses taught by renowned scholars and personnel in both government and private sectors. Moreover, the program’s cooperation with partner universities around the world helps enhancing students’ opportunities in working closely with overseas academic advisors, broadening practical experiences through undertaking collaborative research with leading universities, and expanding professional networks through field studies in both ASEAN and non-ASEAN member countries.

Program Objectives

The main objectives of the master’s degree in ASEAN Studies are as follows;

  1. To produce graduates with knowledge and understanding in the role of ASEAN Community at regional and global levels who are fully qualified to work in public and private sectors, along with international organizations.
  2. To produce graduates who are competent in demonstrating and disseminating knowledge which help forging solidarity of ASEAN Community.
  3. To produce graduates endowed with the ability to expand academics and researchers networks which help pushing forward the academic advancement regarding ASEAN Studies.
  4. To produce graduates who are capable of enhancing opportunities and driving mechanism in knowledge exchange of ASEAN.

Why Choose ....

ASEAN Studies at Thammasat University is unique because the idea of setting up a regional organization as Southeast Asian League to support the nationalist cause in the region during the WWII was initiated by the founder of the University, Dr. Pridi Banomyong, the leader of the Free Thai Movement. ASEAN Studies thus takes up the challenge of globalization in order to shape our new and vibrant future and prosperity of the region.
